Description
The early Slavs imagined the tree of life as the giant oak, with mysteries celebrated at its roots. Those were the ‘roots’, both literary and metaphorically, as the two worlds, the world of mortals and the world of gods might meet there. This work shows the ceremony of engagement, when the winged boat comes down to earth with Lada, the goddess of love bringing peace to the married couple. The goddess is accompanied by her family: littleLel with the fire of Love, Polel, Lada’s second son, the kind and gentle god, bringing the circlet of flowers and the cornucopia to the couple. There’re also Did, Lada’s third son, the god of marriage love, with two white doves (the symbols of fidelity) and his sister, Didiliya(Dzydzilelya), the goddess of female fertility. All the deities bless the marriage, while on earth other characters take part in the mystery: the gusli player, the skomorokh, the girls in a circle dance. On the background, there’s a wooden figure of Veles, the Slavic deity of wisdom, wealth and peace.
